The TH-79A/E handheld transceiver offers the optimum combination of operating
ease and powerful performance in a compact, lightweight design. And it's
clear at first glance: this slim-line FM dual-bander (2 m/70 cm) sports
a dot-matrix LCD -- the first in its class -- providing alphanumeric access
to a unique guide function as well as a user-friendly menu system. Other
features include 80 non-volatile memory channels with ID, DTSS and page
functions, and a DTMF memory function for auto-dial operation.

TH-79A/E in detail:
MOS FET power module
Equipped with a high-efficiency FET power module, the TH-79A/E is extraordinarily
slim and lightweight. Lower voltage requirements mean improved reliability
and longer operating time per charge.
2 m/70 cm dual-band operation
Despite its compact design, the TH-79A/E offers extensive dual-band functions,
including full-duplex operation and the ability to simultaneously receive
two frequencies even on the same band (VHF+VHF or UHF+UHF). In addition,
A.B.C. (automatic band change) ensures that the transceiver will switch
automatically between main and sub bands when a signal is present.
Dot-matrix LCD & menu system
Making its debut on handheld transceivers, the dot-matrix display greatly
improves user-friendliness since there are no limitations on the variety
of messages it can handle. In addition to frequency data, this can be used
to access a menu system with full alphanumeric display of functions and
settings. The operator can also scroll through a summary of current operational
status.
Guide function
This transceiver can be used right out of the box. In fact, there's no need
to carry the manual because of the innovative guide function -- simple operating
instructions that appear in the display at the touch of a button.
80 non-volatile memory channels with ID
The TH-79A/E has 80 memory channels -- all capable of storing transmit and
receive frequencies independently, thus allowing split-frequency operations
(The TH-79A version also has 2 call channels). For greater convenience,
an alphanumeric ID (max. 7 characters) can be recorded to identify each
of the channels. Memory shift and memory clear functions further improve
operating ease. And since all data is stored in non-volatile EEPROM, no
back-up battery is needed.
Multiple scan modes
As well as full band and dual programmable band scans, there is MHz scan
and memory scan. Carrier-operated and time-operated scan stop modes are
also provided.
DTMF keypad with DTMF memory function
The built-in DTMF keypad enables direct frequency entry (in VFO mode) and
direct recall of memory channels (in MR mode). It is also possible to store
up to 10 different 15-digit (maximum) DTMF codes with ID for auto-dial and
autopatch use.
DTSS (Dual-Tone Squelch System) with pager
DTSS opens the squelch to allow DTMF access to the receiver, while the pager
function will alert the operator to an incoming call (this can be switched
off automatically with the correct paging code).
Power-on call sign display
The TH-79A/E can be personalized so that the operator's own call sign (up
to 7 characters) is displayed when the unit is turned on.
